Now, let’s be honest – vegetarian food doesn’t quite top my ‘food cravings’ list. When I’m in the mood to indulge, I think of bacon, burgers, black peppered ribs – something meaty, something substantial and something that I can really bite into. For some reason, vegetables have always seemed like the healthy, wholesome (and if slightly boring) cousin to the tantalising seductress that is meat. See, vegetables smile and give you sensible advice, while meat winks at you with the promise of a wild time. Who would you pick? Heck - hands down, I’D TAKE MEAT. Eating plants has somewhat developed a bad rep, but the crew at Vegie Bar is here to change just that. Housed in the hipster enclave of Fitzroy, the restaurant has been serving up tasty vegetarian options for over two decades. Menu-wise, it was pretty extensive. It was almost like a huge melting pot of different flavours and textures, with Southeast Asian and African influences. We ordered the Baked Field Mushroom (AUD$14), which had a roast capsicum and onion stew piled atop a succulent mushroom. It was so sweet and juicy! To top it all off, they threw in some quinoa and beetroot salad, which made it that much more satisfying. Here comes the star of the show – the Peri Peri Chicken pizza (AUD$12.50 for large, $10.50 for regular) was spicy, zingy and oh-so-good. It came complete with vegan cheese and fake chicken, which I've never been fond of, but this tasted pretty damn convincing. The well balanced pizza crust was a joy to eat. I'm not a fan of skinny pizza, or pizzas with bases so thin it feels like you're biting off a biscuit. Give me the dough! This was a happy middle between a thick, doughy base and a light and crispier option, which I gladly chowed down. Well seasoned faux chicken and a not-too-indulgent pizza crust? Talk about guilt-free eating :-) The mish mash of marinated cucumber, fluffy couscous and chickpeas was also delicious. Jam-packed and bursting with flavour, the Moroccan Stew (AUD$15) was one sexy beast of a dish, tempting you with its aroma of exotic spices. My only qualm is that I wish they provided more pieces of pita bread to sop up the remains of this. Four slices just isn't enough for starving girls! By this point, we were pretty stuffed, but how could we leave without trying some of their desserts? Gluttony tastes especially sweet, when it comes in the form of a Sticky Date Pudding (AUD$10.50), which we promptly demolished. It wasn't the best sticky date pudding I've had, but it was good enough to satisfy. All round, an incredibly satisfactory and flavourful dinner here. Vegie Bar's a game-changer, and while I have no plans to become a vegetarian just yet, this has given me more reason to eat my greens :-) Vegie Bar 380 Brunswick St Fitzroy, VIC 3065 Tel: 03 9417 6935 Follow me on Instagram: @paintingrachelred for more updates.
Picked up this vintage Valditevere scarf last weekend and I've been exploring different ways of wearing it since. It's a beautiful and rich shade of crimson that adds a bit of character to outfits...plus, it kind of lies in the grey area between sailor-esque / air stewardess / prep school girl, which is the sweetest spot to be in, no? :-) Hope everyone is in high spirits this week x Plaid shirt: Paul Smith

There is just something so incredibly comforting about pancakes. Every exam season, I somehow find myself with a massive craving for it that just will not go away. I've since learnt that it's best not to fight it, and to go ahead and just have some damn pancakes :-) This usually involves me mucking around the kitchen at midnight, getting out jars of honey, nutella AND peanut butter (because I might as well go all out, right?), before slinking back into bed with a batch of freshly-made goodness. Mmm. I tend to use this super simple pancake pre-mix, because honestly - who can be bothered to faff around with flour and all that jazz during final submissions? Not me. Here, I used some chocolate brownies that Desmond brought me (so I wouldn't die during finals lol) and topped it with some honey and crushed pistachios. Yum!
Best kind of subsistence one could ask for. To all my friends who are still having exams, hang in there - the end is near! x Follow me on Instagram: @paintingrachelred for more updates. Hello all :-) I'm back! First off, let's talk about the crap weather. Winter is imminent, my friends. That means it's time to whip out the tights, but with these delicate pieces of hosiery comes a whole host of problems that run the gamut. I mean...buy them, wear them, and then bloody rip them – that always seems to be the case with tights I own. From the length, to the quality of the fabric and its propensity to tear in the most awkward places, tights are a troublesome yet essential part of most women’s fall wardrobes. But that was until I discovered the Razzamatazz opaque tights. It happened while I was browsing through Priceline, adding things that I probably did not need to my basket, when I saw these stockings humbly hanging on a shelf. And then I thought – why not? So, it came back home with me and guess what? It might’ve been the best thing I’ve bought all year. These babies are virtually indestructible. I got this in the 40 Denier version, but they do this in a plethora of other variations – footless, printed, sheerer, more opaque…you name it. Razzamatazz even offers fleece-lined tights, which will be lovely for the winter, and has extended their range to include body-shaping hosiery that keeps your wobbly bits in nicely. This comes in two sizes, ‘Petite / Medium’ and ‘Tall / X-Tall’. For girls like myself who come in at around 1.6 metres and are neither tall nor petite, the size ‘Petite / Medium’ is a godsend. It has just the right length of fabric and covers my gams without me having to jam my toes against the closed end of the stocking, desperately yanking the fabric up. To add to the complexity that is finding the Perfect Tights, after some wear, most tights begin to develop those pesky little fuzz balls that cling to the surface of the fabric. This is called ‘pilling’, and any attempt to pluck those unsightly flecks will only result in either: 1. Ripping a small hole in the fabric, or 2. Causing parts of the fibre in the stocking to come undone, ...both of which results in an awful ladder up your thigh. Thankfully, the Razzamatazz tights do not have this issue. Pilling is absent, if not minimal, and if it’s any indication, I’m on my 20th wear with no rips, tears or gashes. As for the quality of the fabric, it seemed fairly durable. Believe me, I am no lady; and tights that want to roll with me need to be able to withstand a bit of manhandling. But how durable is durable? I put it to the test by clipping my nails and went about my daily life, waiting to see if my chipped nail polish or freshly trimmed talons would prove to be a problem. Sure enough, it got caught in my tights on several occasions; but upon inspection, I couldn’t find any holes or disruptions in the fabric.
Hurrah! I went one step further and sat on cobblestone streets before hurriedly turning to check my bum for any damage done. The result? Nothing. Nada. No dramatic gashes, not even fuzzy fabric on the area that came into contact with the rough surface. Now, of course, if I were to vigorously wiggle my butt against the cobblestones, these stockings would most certainly have been damaged; but the point of the exercise was to see how well the tights would hold up in ordinary, everyday situations. And I’d say it held up wonderfully. The material was delicate yet sturdy, and is far superior to tights that you can find from high street retailers. Best of all? :-) It was just AUD$12.99 for a pack of three. What a bargain! Each pair comes down to an economical AUD$4.30, which makes me feel like running to my nearest Priceline and stocking up on more of these (aha, pun intended). Plus, when they do eventually get old, you can toss them without feeling guilty. So, to the women who are looking for tights for the colder months ahead, Razzamatazz is where it's at, y'all. Thought I'd provide a quick update as to what I've been up to lately, and why I've been slightly absent on this space - Van has left to go back to Singapore, and I've just been working on my final essays for submission in the coming week. It's crunch time right now, with college kids like myself making a last ditch attempt at salvaging their grades, so this space has been left unattended for a bit. In the meantime, I'm counting down the days until we're out for winter break, and I'll be updating this space much more once I'm done next week :-) Will be back with a chatty piece then. Hope everyone's doing well x Follow me on Instagram: @paintingrachelred for more updates.
