I got onto a ferry and headed to Batam with a couple of my friends over the weekend, where we frolicked around the island, consuming copious amounts of seafood and beer. Thanks Pat for being such a wonderful host and showing us a good time :-) Here, I'm holding up not one, but TWO boxes of Martabak Manis - a kind of thick pancake that's stuffed and eaten as dessert. My Indonesian friends have been raving about this for awhile, so I was pretty stoked to try it for the first time. It comes in two variations: one with chocolate and shaved cheese, and the other with chocolate filling. We stayed at Patrick's place, which was bloody enormous. Here's a statue of Virgin Mary in the garden: Here's Eve, looking resplendent in the morning sunlight <3 The feast to end all feasts before it was time to leave Batam :-) Always a great time with these guys!

With its one-of-a-kind designs and hand painted offerings, thebvcollection is set to shake things up with its latest Tribal Muse jewellery collection; which promises a unique mix of textures and colours. The jewellery is as bold as it is beautifully made, and is the sort of thing that would excite girls who love statement pieces. What's more, each design only comes in limited numbers, so you never have to worry about being seen with the same accessories as someone else on the street. thebvcollection's aesthetic is also one that features lots of stacking - jewelled necklaces are often layered to create a look that packs a punch. Hop on over to their site to get inspired, girls! ;)

Since I've landed in Singapore, I've made it my mission to stuff my face with local food at every available opportunity, and dim sum was on top of the list. Who better to do it with than with Melbourne mates who understand the pain? :) The legendary liu sha bao - look at that sweet custard goodness oozing out of the soft bun! It was everything it's made out to be, and more. This was my first time at Swee Choon, and to be honest I'm not sure if this place lives up to its hype. Almost everyone I know seems to be raving about Swee Choon; and while the food isn't bad, I wouldn't say that it was anything worth writing home about. With the exception of their custard buns, I found the food to be of decent quality. Its main selling point lies in the fact that it's open till the wee hours of the morning to satisfy your late-night, bite-sized cravings at wallet friendly prices. Tung Lok still retains its spot as my favourite place for Cantonese dim sum in Singapore. Follow me on Instagram: @paintingrachelred for more updates.
Woohoo, we are back in the +65! Got together with my Melbourne mates and chatted about what everyone has been up to since we left Australia. It was so good to see these guys again, over iced coffees and my favourite truffle fries at PS Café in Ann Siang Hill. Not sure if you guys noticed, but I took the plunge and chopped my hair! :-) I wanted a bit of a change, and told my stylist to do whatever he wanted with it. He came up with the idea of a blunt and slightly choppy long bob, which is a departure from my usual long and straight hair. I love it! Also, is it just me, or did PS Café reduce the portions of their truffle fries? I'm not sure if this is just exclusive to the Ann Siang Hill branch, or if the portion sizes have been changed at branches in Palais Renaissance / Dempsey as well, but Eve and I both noticed that the portions were significantly smaller than we remembered -
I would even go as far as to say that the portion was HALVED. To the management of PS Café: I would like the original portion back. Thanks. Harvey Spector's charm never seems to wane and I am certain he is my soulmate. I love you, Harvey. The flight home went quite smoothly, except for the fact that I somehow left my camera on board the flight - I was looking at old pictures stored on the camera, and mindlessly left it on my seat. Cue a frantic 2AM lost and found report, a telex to Dubai and finally a call from Emirates the next day, informing me that they had managed to find my camera under my seat. Thank God.
So here's a big thank you to the crew of Emirates EK405, from MELB - SIN, for their honesty and efficiency in tracking down my belongings. Thank you all so much. Six months ago, I decided I would move to Australia for university, and it was a pretty last minute decision - I had twenty days to pack my bags, book a flight, find an apartment, apply for a visa, set up bank accounts and the myriad of other administrative things that needed to be settled before one moves to a new city. I was unable to secure an apartment before I arrived (which meant I was virtually homeless), but I flew in anyway - and by God's grace, I managed to secure a great apartment that's located just five minutes away from the city central and from uni. Here, I've gotten more acquainted with household chores, started to actually enjoy cooking and better yet, become a reasonably good cook (which is a miracle, ask anyone). The walls of my apartment have bore witness to its fair share of disasters (like the time my hair caught fire while I was struggling to light a @!#$&-ing candle) and victories; laughter and tears, but above all, I have found living alone to be unbelievably rewarding. Today marks the sixth month that I’ve been in Melbourne; and all I can think of is how thankful I am for having the privilege of being here, in this wonderful and magical city. I’m catching a flight back to Singapore in a couple of hours, and knowing that I will soon be back on home ground makes me feel both excited and nostalgic. I am not the same person as I was when I first left, but if there’s anything I’ve learnt, it’s that people may come and go, but the ones that love you never really leave.
