Lazing on the beach and listening to the sound of waves, crashing against the shore - what a beautiful and calming way to end our holiday in Thailand. Here's a glimpse of the private beach at The Surin Hotel, which was utterly sublime. Thanks for the memories, Phuket - we had such a wonderful, wonderful time.

Bronzed skin, a strapless maxi dress, light sandals and plenty of gold jewellery piled on: here's what I wore for afternoon dessert and drinks at Joe's Downstairs. The small seaside bar crowds up in the evenings, because it's a prime spot for expats looking to watch the sun go down. In the afternoons, however, JD's is often empty; which makes it a great place to enjoy an ice-cold Corona over the faint sounds of instrumental jazz. This is more of a bar than anything else, so I would definitely recommend dining elsewhere before coming here for drinks / dessert. The bar serves up wonderful cocktails, and boasts a great quality wine list that's worth a look as well.
I was here for drinks on Valentine's Day, and I gotta say, the sunset was so beautiful that it looked unreal. It's the place for couples looking to cozy up under the balmy summer nights ;-) Printed maxi dress: Thrifted Gold woven cuff: Banana Republic Gold cage ring: Lovisa Chained crossbody: Zara Gold charm bracelet: Dotti Brown leather sandals: Zara Sunglasses: Illesteva Follow me on Instagram: @paintingrachelred for more updates. White, sandy beaches, sea salt in your hair - that pretty much sums up how I spent my summer. I took off for Phuket recently for a bit of R&R, and thought I'd share some of the photos here. Enjoy! Paid a visit to Baan Rim Pa, a treetop restaurant that boasts a breathtaking view of Patong beach. Fresh pomelo salad with shredded chicken and lightly roasted coconut bits! My coconut-obsessed self was thoroughly satisfied. *licks lips greedily* Crispy fried fish...simply spectacular when paired with a sweet chilli sauce. I have no words. Also, they do a beautiful Thai red curry with duck meat, which is served with lychee fruit on the side. If anyone is planning a trip to Phuket, I would seriously recommend dining at Baan Rim Pa.
Tasty food, great service, and a view that's to die for - what's not to like? :) Stay tuned for more snapshots here! Follow me on Instagram: @paintingrachelred for more updates. A goal that I've set for myself, stylistically, is to be more adventurous this year - I want to take chances, and try new things, experiment with shapes, silhouettes and styles. And if I "fail" (read: look horrid), then I fail. So what? A recent revelation of mine was that clothes are just that - clothes. If the outfit looks awful, then that's fine - you can strip it off, and work with a clean canvas all over again. There is no big deal. People have been making fashion faux pas for decades, and if you look ridiculous, all you'll have is a hilarious (and perhaps slightly horrific) memory of what you wore in your 20s. With that revelation in place, this fear of mine dissipated - the fear of looking stupid or being laughed at, which made me take what I wore a little too seriously. This Zara blouse was one of those never-got-around-to-wearing-it purchases that looked good in the fitting room, but less so after bringing it home. I thought the ruffled shoulder detailing placed too much emphasis on my shoulders, and was reminiscent of the exaggerated shoulder styles of the '80s that made women look like quarterbacks. A recent closet excavation found this gem, and I quickly fell back in love with it and will probably take it back with me when I return to Melbourne. (what can I say? fickle is thy heart.) Seated at the top of Swissotel hotel, Equinox boasts an incredible view of the Singapore skyline; and based on my experience from a recent visit, offers little else. I booked Evelyn and myself in for a girly afternoon at the restaurant, with lots of animated chatting over cakes, dessert, and tea. We were surprised to see that the high tea selection at Equinox was mostly centered on international cuisines, while the dessert options were limited and lacking, save for a few cakes. Laksa seems to be an odd dish to offer at high tea, doesn't it? I enjoyed the sushi selection and particularly enjoyed the mango sushi seen above. Yum! The salad bar was quite decent as well. The desserts, on the other hand, were forgettable, passing through your lips and sliding down your throat without much recognition. It was like sitting through a date with a lukewarm lover, listening to stories you don't care much about. There was no spark, nothing. The fondue stand offered marshmallows and dried fruits, but failed to offer strawberries. What's a fondue fountain without fresh strawberries to dip in the gooey chocolate? Shame. Equinox's high tea was average at best. What's more, it lasts for only an hour and a half, from 3.30PM to 5PM daily - turning what is supposedly a luxurious, low-pressure affair into a panicky sprint to the end. My recommendations?
Expand the dessert and pastry selection, move dishes like laksa to your lunch menu, and consider extending the high tea hours to make for a more pleasurable dining experience. Since I chopped my hair, I've been experimenting with different styles and textures; some days wearing it straight and smooth, and other days wearing it wavy and loose. I can't decide which looks better, but I'm leaning towards the slightly curlier option. What do you think? :) Here, I'm out on a quick ice cream run in an oversized bright yellow blazer. I love the boxy silhouette of this piece, and juxtaposed it with these crazy comfortable, ripped denim shorts! Yellow oversized blazer: Dotti
