Jo and I ducked into Mekong last week to escape the freezing cold weather, and took comfort in piping hot bowls of Vietnamese pho. Perfectly cooked beef slices and rice noodles soaked in a flavourful broth is the best meal for cold, windy days! Mekong is my go-to place in the city for authentic pho. There is a no-nonsense attitude to the way that this restaurant is run, with wait staff efficiently assigning people to tables and taking orders.
What it lacks in ambience, it makes up for in straight up good food.

I've sort of developed a standard order, every time I'm here - I always order the sliced beef noodles in a small size (AUD$10.90) and some chicken and prawn spring rolls (AUD$4.50 for 4). Both are equally delicious, and I especially love eating the spring rolls wrapped in fresh lettuce that's served alongside this dish. I've also had the chargrilled chicken noodles, which are fantastic and full of smokey flavour! It must also be said that the food is served very quickly for a place this busy. The service isn't great, so be warned - come only for the food, y'all.
I hear there's even better pho available in Richmond, so I will reserve judgement on how Mekong fares in comparison with other Vietnamese restaurants in Melbourne.
